A Kona man has been charged for allegedly shooting a woman in the leg while illegally target practicing in a forest.
Hawaii County Police said Sean Smith II, 24, was charged with second-degree reckless endangering and two weapons offenses after police responded to a call Tuesday night about a wounded woman in a forest area off Pauilo Landing Road.
Smith and the woman had been target practicing in the area, which is not a designated gun range, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Police conducted an investigation and determined that no other people were in the area at the time of the incident and that a shot fired from Smith’s firearm ricocheted causing the jury.
The woman was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment of a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound to her leg following the incident.
Police charged Smith Wednesday night. He was released from custody after posting $10,500 bail.
